Astaxanthin with phospholipids

Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid, a red pigment molecule found in some species of seaweed, fish and crustaceans.

The dietary supplement combines natural astaxanthin from the alga Haematococcus pluvialis and phospholipids. Carotenoids such as astaxanthin are mostly fat-soluble and therefore do not mix well with water, which limits their bioavailability. Absorption of naturally occurring astaxanthin in seafood and algae is only 50%. (Mol Nutr Food Res.2012 Sep; 56 (9): 1385-97). However, emulsification of such molecules with phospholipids has been shown to increase absorption by almost 12-fold compared to standard phospholipid-free formulations. Astaxanthin can cross the blood-brain and blood-eye barriers.
